Essential Elements Olympics

Syracuse Elementary recently hosted its annual Olympic event for students. Twenty-five students participated in the hour-long event.

Students rotated through five stations—dancing with ribbon wands, climbing a rock wall with music, Frisbee throwing, bowling, paper-plate skating and a tossing game. Sixth-grade students helped run the stations, while several classes cheered from the sidelines with handmade signs. Many parents attended, capturing photos and video throughout the event.

“I’m so full of joy and gratitude at how big it’s gotten and how the school has just gotten behind my back to help my kiddos have a good time,” teacher Angie Winger said.

Winger said the idea for the Olympics was inspired by her son’s participation in snowboarding at Snowbasin, where athletes complete a run and receive medals during a mini-Olympics celebration. She wanted to create a similar experience for her students—one centered on accomplishment and recognition.

“I wanted to do something fun and amazing for my students,” Winger said. “Every child has a smile spread across their face because they accomplished something grand. I wanted to give my students the same feeling.”
