5th grade students from Ms. Burch's class standing in their classroom with Senator Todd Weiler

Fifth grade students in Ms. Burch’s class at Meadowbrook Elementary recently stepped into the world of government—right from their classroom! After noticing how much students missed having access to the big field at recess, these young leaders decided to take action in a big way: by holding a mock congressional debate.

For an entire month, students worked hard preparing for their big day. They interviewed classmates, teachers, and staff members to gather opinions and evidence. They carefully crafted arguments, practiced public speaking, and learned how to respectfully debate important issues—just like real lawmakers.

The classroom transformed into a mini congress as students presented their ideas, shared different perspectives, and worked to persuade their peers. The debate was full of thoughtful points, teamwork, and impressive confidence from all participants.

Adding to the excitement, Senator Todd Weiler visited to observe the debate in action. Afterward, he spoke with students about how Utah’s government works and answered their thoughtful questions. Students were thrilled to learn from a real senator and see how their classroom experience connects to the real world.

This hands-on project not only helped students better understand the democratic process, but also showed them that their voices matter. Who knows—these fifth graders may be future leaders in the making!
